The 2.0 Ghz unit has 2Gb of RAM, a 120Gb spinning HDD, and a DVD burner.<\/p>\n<p>First thing is to know that you can&#8217;t just get any ISO image and write it to USB and install. You&#8217;ll need to go old school DVD burning, plus use a special ISO. You&#8217;ll want <a href=\"https:\/\/help.ubuntu.com\/community\/Mac_mini2-1\">option two from this page<\/a>.\u00a0The most recent mac server version I was able to find was <a href=\"http:\/\/cdimage.ubuntu.com\/ubuntu\/releases\/14.04.5\/release\/ubuntu-14.04.5-desktop-amd64+mac.iso\">14.04 LTS.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After you have the ISO, you can burn it on the Mac Mini with:<\/p>\n<p><code>hdiutil burn\u00a0ubuntu-14.04.5-desktop-amd64+mac.iso<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Next up, boot the disc holding the <code>c<\/code>\u00a0key, then run through the install after which you should reboot.<\/p>\n<p>Next, get the system up-to-date with:<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo apt-get update &amp;&amp; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade<\/code><\/p>\n<p>followed by:<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo reboot<\/code><\/p>\n<p>then:<\/p>\n<p><code>sudo do-release-upgrade<\/code><\/p>\n<p>and after about 30 minutes, you should be at Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve got a couple of Mac Mini 2,1\u00a0that have been sitting idle and forgotten for what seems like years.
